If the remote control is not paired with the projector when you first receive the device, point the remote at the projector to access the Bluetooth pairing page for pairing. (At this stage, the remote and projector are connected via infrared. Avoid placing the projector against a wall, as the remote may lose functionality.) 

Bluetooth pairing path: Settings > Remotes & Accessories > Pair Accessory.
